Touching down in LA soon...

...I'm back in LA for a few weeks in June.

Naturally, I'd love to see folks. I have a lot of things I need to do during the day so I'm not comfortable with committing to stuff during weekdays before about 7 or 8 (don't you folks have jobs, anyway?)

I WILL be playing some gigs. So far I have 2 confirmed already and I'm still in negotiations for some others. Since I've been gone for a while I'm open to suggestions for other gigs, too:

without ANY promotion (other than telling another producer/friend) i've managed to get on the top tracks for this site! actually, i was much higher in the list yesterday (shoulda grabbed that.) now it's possible that i'm that high cuz there's not that much deep house, but still it's a charge.

i guess this is also my official "coming out" (of sorts) as an artist/label head (stop laughing saul.)

today i played a BIG DEAL party! i was the dj for the OFFICIAL closing party of this: http://www.cinemasitges.com/ct/ (for those of you like me who are too lazy to click the link, it's to the website for sitges' 40th annual film festival.)

woody allen's new film premiered earlier in the week here (he was shooting in barcelona.)

ellen was there, had fun and assisted me in many ways (isn't she great?) it's also the first time she's ever seen me play in the venue (hotel calipolis lounge club.) sorry the pix are so skimpy, but i was earning my money and LN isn't my personal photog (as much as i'd like one.)

i'll also upload some pix from thursday taken at my new "intimate" (read: small) but really fun weekly!

lemme know what's up w/y'all...

btw, l.a. folks, i should be around for a few weeks in mid-to-late november...
...and i'm looking for gigs.

i was trying to find probably his SECOND most famous song (behind "birdland" of course) that he often is not credited for: "mercy mercy mercy." he wrote that for cannonball adderley back in the 60s and it became a HUGE hit. anyway, i can't find a good video of joe playing w/cannonball other than "jive samba" which was written by nat adderley (cannonball's brother.) the interview at the beginning is by oscar brown jr and you get to hear julian "cannonball" adderley's voice (which i happen to really *dig*): http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2280001735319021395

although the leader (cannonball) is also playing from the beyond everyone else involved to my knowledge (except joe, of course) is still in the here & now. if you're not familiar w/yusef lateef, he is also a name of note.

This coming week will contain a HUGE milestone for me--I'm leaving LA! Not only am I leaving Los Angeles (I know that's a big deal in and of itself) I'm leaving the COUNTRY! Unlike previous trips where I was gone for a number of weeks, the next time I return to Los Angeles I will be a *visiting EX-PATRIOT* of the United States of America! A long-time desire of mine has finally manifested into reality--I'm gonna be living in Europe!

In honor of that, I'll be playing TWO farewell gigs! The first will be at my residency for the last 7 years--Something Else! Monday June 25 @ The Brig (1515 Abbot Kinney Bl. Venice 90291 (310) 399-7537 http://thebrig.com ) One of my former partners, Chaka, has spoken to the owner so he and ToneArm will be taking the reins after my departure (SO GO SUPPORT THEM!!)

The 2nd gig will be Wednesday June 27 (the night before I take off) at my friends' Adam (Dj Adlove) & Scott's night @ The Hideout (112 W. Channel Road Santa Monica, CA 90402 (310) 429-1851 http://www.santamonicahideout.com/ ) There's actually room to dance, and I'm expecting some of you to test that theory... ;)

"Here - at this final hour, in this quiet place - Harlem has come to bid farewell to one of its brightest hopes -extinguished now, and gone from us forever. For Harlem is where he worked and where he struggled and fought - his home of homes, where his heart was, and where his people are - and it is, therefore, most fitting that we meet once again - in Harlem - to share these last moments with him. For Harlem has ever been gracious to those who have loved her, have fought her, and have defended her honor even to the death.

It is not in the memory of man that this beleaguered, unfortunate, but nonetheless proud community has found a braver, more gallant young champion than this Afro-American who lies before us - unconquered still. I say the word again, as he would want me to : Afro-American - Afro-American Malcolm, who was a master, was most meticulous in his use of words. Nobody knew better than he the power words have over minds of men. Malcolm had stopped being a 'Negro' years ago. It had become too small, too puny, too weak a word for him. Malcolm was bigger than that. Malcolm had become an Afro-American and he wanted - so desperately - that we, that all his people, would become Afro-Americans too.

There are those who will consider it their duty, as friends of the Negro people, to tell us to revile him, to flee, even from the presence of his memory, to save ourselves by writing him out of the history of our turbulent times. Many will ask what Harlem finds to honor in this stormy, controversial and bold young captain - and we will smile. Many will say turn away - away from this man, for he is not a man but a demon, a monster, a subverter and an enemy of the black man - and we will smile. They will say that he is of hate - a fanatic, a racist - who can only bring evil to the cause for which you struggle! And we will answer and say to them : Did you ever talk to Brother Malcolm? Did you ever touch him, or have him smile at you? Did you ever really listen to him? Did he ever do a mean thing? Was he ever himself associated with violence or any public disturbance? For if you did you would know him. And if you knew him you would know why we must honor him.

Malcolm was our manhood, our living, black manhood! This was his meaning to his people. And, in honoring him, we honor the best in ourselves. Last year, from Africa, he wrote these words to a friend: 'My journey', he says, 'is almost ended, and I have a much broader scope than when I started out, which I believe will add new life and dimension to our struggle for freedom and honor and dignity in the States. I am writing these things so that you will know for a fact the tremendous sympathy and support we have among the African States for our Human Rights struggle. The main thing is that we keep a United Front wherein our most valuable time and energy will not be wasted fighting each other.' However we may have differed with him - or with each other about him and his value as a man - let his going from us serve only to bring us together, now.

Consigning these mortal remains to earth, the common mother of all, secure in the knowledge that what we place in the ground is no more now a man - but a seed - which, after the winter of our discontent, will come forth again to meet us. And we will know him then for what he was and is - a Prince - our own black shining Prince! - who didn't hesitate to die, because he loved us so."

if you were a kid in the 70s evel knievel was an ICON. remember all the dumb stuff we used to do cuz he was "cool?" (i had a stupid helmet and tested some of the limits of my fears--didn't get very far.) i say that to support my assertion that in some way the "touch the sky" video is a tribute to mr. kneivel--otherwise why pick a guy most have forgotten? as far as whether or not evel was a "player" (with the ladies) i seriously doubt that he WASN'T (he was a "dangerous-biker" type, draw your own conclusions...) even though he didn't make the jump, who of us had even HEARD of snake river before he attempted it?

about kanye... he's turning out to be a bit of an ego-maniac, too. i'm not really that crazy about his music (and even less so of his fans who think i'm nuts for not digging his music) BUT he's brought some good things to the messages of pop/hiphop music (i.e., positivity.) there have been many before him, but he's made it the biggest so far (WHY CAN'T MOS DEF GET OVER LIKE THIS?)

people as you like (I get a bar percentage, so think about your alky buddies...)

Since this is a lounge and not a club, I will be sporting more of the "Velvet" side of my sound, not the "Rough & Ready" dancefloor assault (i.e., no "Doom's Night" but possibly some Bugz In The Attic.)

The scunderground collective is manifesting a more
eclectic mix to the bay area cultural scene. This
will include dj'ing with an emphasis on challenging
the genre specific, the latest in visual art, and
amazing, progressive food.

It's all going down every Saturday night at a fairly
new bistro in the city of SF called "Triptych". You
can check out this beautiful indoor/outdoor space at

So we have myself, Dj ABC on the dub plates, spinning
the vinyl in the styles of soul, funk, downtempo,
instrumental hip-hop, dub, broken-beat, acid-jazz,
afro beat, deep house, ambient, and a few other
experimental surprises. Always featuring unique tracks only
to be heard at Triptych.

And in the kitchen we have another scunderground
member, Chef Craig Howell, spinning an eclectic mix of
California cuisine, Mediterranean, French, and other
spontaneousness on the heated plates. If you've never
tasted his mix before, and you love progressive
cooking, he will blow you away. The folks who have
made it up to SF so far were well rewarded by a
quality of culinary skills you will be hard pressed to find
in the bay area.

And finally, spinning the images on the walls we
have two brand new artists....

JENNALEX, aka Jennifer Alexander, is an artist living
and working in San Francisco. Originally from the
sandhills of North Carolina, she spent her childhood
wandering through pine forests along the Cape Fear
River, staring at the sun out of the window of her
classroom, and watching the grass grow threw cracks in
the pavement. These early influences still persist in
her work to this day as evidenced in her fascination
with nature, the human impact on it, and the way light
works with different elements. She continued her
education at the North Carolina School of the Arts,
where she focused her attention on Scene Design for
Theatre, and continued to develop an interest in
written and spoken words. After she received her BFA,
she packed all her belongings in a covered wagon
(actually a white pickup truck with a camper shell)
and headed west to California, where she continued
honing her craft through years of figure drawing and
various digital explorations, until she became
fascinated with plastic and began combining epoxy
resin castings with light. Her passion for poetry,
nature, philosophy and music are main influences in
her work. Recently, she developed a strong interest in
drawing portraits. Focusing her eye on humanity and
drawing out the deeper subconscious levels of her
subjects are what drive her in this process. Her muse
has led her to explore many different mediums, from
ink, watercolor, and pastels, to video, mobiles,

"I began shooting photos as a boy in the 1960s. In
1966 my father (an excellent photographer, himself)
gave me a 35mm single-lens reflex camera, and I have
used that medium ever since, with the addition of a
digital camera in 2002.

and photo essays with Tim Wilbers, who now teaches
photography and animation at the University of Dayton,
Ohio. That is the extent of my formal training so far,
though I've learned much from other photographers—both
their pictures and their writings.

People, objects, scenery: any of these can excite me
by their variety, by the mystery of this world, and by
the things that light can do. I will be exhibiting 18
prints of my photos this month of December"

guests were lil' john roberts on drums (OMG!!!)
and noelle from the rebirth on vocals (see above)

i don't go to many "live" shows, this was definitely worth breaking a habit for... bembe is a great singer/front-person (not a bad dancer!) and mark is VICIOUS on the keys & drum machine. the set is a little loosely structured in terms of how they get from tune to tune, but there's no break in the music until the end (just the way i like it!) lot of afro-latin rhythms bandied about (john roberts SMOKES on that stuff!) and mark is definitely infected with the funk...

Greetings All,

Since we have officially become a weekly event we
decided that it would be appropriate to give our
Saturday nights offering an original name.

So here it is:

Triptych Bistro Presents......

"TilaTila" on Saturday nights!
(That's Swahili for well mixed...)

The scunderground collective is manifesting a more
eclectic mix to the bay area cultural scene. This
will include dj'ing with an emphasis on challenging
the genre specific, the latest in visual art, and
amazing, progressive food.

It's all going down every Saturday night at a fairly
new bistro in the city of SF called "Triptych". You
can check out this beautiful indoor/outdoor space at

So we have myself, Dj ABC on the dub plates, spinning
the vinyl in the styles of soul, funk, downtempo,
instrumental hip-hop, dub, broken-beat, acid-jazz,
afro beat, deep house, ambient, and a few other
experimental surprises. Always featuring artists only
to be heard at Triptych.

And in the kitchen we have another scunderground
member, Chef Craig Howell, spinning an eclectic mix of
California cuisine, Mediterranean, French, and other
spontaneousness on the heated plates. If you've never
tasted his mix before, and you love progressive
cooking, he will blow you away. The folks who have
made it up to SF so far were well rewarded by a
quality of culinary skills you will not find in Santa
Cruz.

And finally now spinning the images on the walls we
have a brand new artist. Blake Tucker is a primarily
landscape photographer who creates unique,
hand-crafted original artwork from his own digitally
manipulated photography. They are presented on canvas
like traditional paintings and will delight your
visual senses. Works range from 8" x 10" to large 44"

while listening to smooth eclectic beats, and viewing
the interesting visual interpretations of our

Greetings All,

Well summer is finally over and the craziness that ensued has settled a bit. So now the scunderground collective finally has some time to once again attempt to bring a more eclectic mix to the bay area dj music scene. But this time we are also going to bring other elements in the mix, that being interesting visual art, and amazing, progressive food.

It's all going down this Saturday night at a fairly new venue in the city of SF called "Triptych". You can check out this beautiful space at their website here:

So we have myself, Dj ABC on the dub plates, spinning the licorice pizza in the styles of soul, funk, downtempo, instrumental hip-hop, dub, broken-beat, acid-jazz, afro beat, deep sexy house, micro house, and a few other surprises.

And in the kitchen we have another scunderground member, Chef Craig Howell, spinning an eclectic mix of California cuisine, Mediterranean, French, and other spontaneousness on the heated plates. If you've never tasted his mix before, and you love progressive cooking, he wil blow you away. All the food is hand picked by him and fresh as the sea breeze on a warm spring day. ;)

And finally spinning the images on the walls we have artist David W. Dieter.

David W. Dieter's paintings and drawings are inspired
by dance and music. He is influenced by the human form
in classical and contemporary dance and its
relationship to its environment. He draws inspiration
from local and international dancers in their natural
and unnatural settings. David's art is mixed media
utilizing acrylics, pastels and collage in his
painting and drawings while exploring form, movement,
emotion and the relationship of dancers to each other
and their settings. He combines traditional dance with
new forms creating a hybrid style.

So there you have it, if you like to eat good food, while listening to smooth eclectic beats, while viewing the interesting visual interpretations of this movement this is the night for you!

Gilles Peterson from the BBC is in SF this Saturday
night. He is performing with some great live acts, and
a amazing local dj support from the crew at Massive
Selector. But rather than repeat all the bio's just go

If you like your broken-hop beats on the jazz tip,
DON'T MISS THIS SHOW. I talked to one of the promoters
yesterday and they are saying that tickets are moving
like crazy, so it may sell out...

On a similar musical note we served up some serious
jazzadelic inspired food, art, and beats at Tryptich
last Saturday. It went smooothly enough that the owner
wants to make it a regular happening!

Thanks to my sister Michelle, Darrell, and Stephon for
supporting with some friendly faces.

So we're back serving "Something Else" for dinner this
Saturday night at a colorful new venue in the city of

ABOUT DWELE

Neo-soul singer/songwriter/producer Dwele grew up on Detroit's west side, listening to soul music from Motown visionaries Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye as well as jazz on the radio. Born Andwele Gardner, he began writing songs at the age of ten, after his father was murdered outside his home, and attended Cody High in Detroit. Dwele spent a year studying music at Wayne State but then opted for an informal education, making music at his home while living in Dearborn and working for AAA. His demo tape, 1998's The Rize, made waves around the Motor City, and he spent time collaborating with Detroit hip-hop group Slum Village and Philadelphia rapper Bahamadia.
